ZANZIBAR ISLAND

ZANZIBAR SERENA INN

The Zanzibar Serena Inn is one of the most luxurious and scenically located hotels in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The hotel comprises 51 rooms, including a state suite, two executive suites, six prime suites and one honeymoon suite. The prime and honeymoon suites have their own hammocks on the balcony. The en-suite bedrooms have a mini-bar, air conditioner, satellite television with in-house movies, telephone, hairdryer and safe.

DHOW PALACE

The Dhow Palace, with its Arabian archways, authentic Zanzibari antiques and ornate ornaments, was originally an Omani mansion dating back to the 1870s. It is certainly one of the best hotels in Stone Town. The rooms are spacious, luxuriously appointed and the service is impressively friendly. The 17 bedrooms are tastefully furnished with Zanzibari antiques. Balconies in the rooms overlook an attractive courtyard with palms and creepers. You have the convenience of an air conditioner, television, telephone, mini-bar and hairdryer.

EMERSON AND GREEN

This beautifully guesthouse is located in the heart of Stone Town.

There are 10 rooms in this three-storey building accessed via a steep stairwell. Each one differs in size, layout and special features. The top rooms offer the best views, but have ceiling fans only. All the downstairs rooms have air conditioning. South and North Room boast open-air stone baths with lattice-enclosed verandas.

MBWENI RUINS

This is a great place for bird and nature lovers and for those who prefer a tranquil setting a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town. Mbweni Ruins Hotel is situated in a botanical garden, overlooking a golden stretch of beach dotted with mangroves. Most of the 13 en-suite rooms are spacious, comfortable and decorated in typical Zanzibar style. They are air-conditioned and have verandas overlooking the lush gardens and sea.

TEMBO HOUSE HOTEL

Tembo House is a highly attractive hotel. It is one of the few hotels in Stone Town to be set on the beachfront. The guest rooms at Tembo Hotel are decorated with oriental and Swahili antiques and ornaments. Each of the 29 rooms has an air conditioner, a fan, a mini-bar fridge, satellite television, a telephone and an en-suite bathroom. Extra beds are available for children. Many of the rooms have wooden balconies overlooking the swimming pool. The bathrooms are sunken, Arabian-style, blue-tiled, sit-down affairs with hand-held showers.

RAS NUNGWI

This is by far the best place to stay in the Nungwi area. The white, sandy beach is idyllic and it’s long enough to spread out and find your own spot to sunbathe. Ras Nungwi offers 32 spacious and luxurious thatched rooms with a variety of attractive options, many with excellent sea views. All the rooms have air-conditioners, balconies and en-suite bathrooms.

NUNGWI VILLAGE BEACH RESORT

Nungwi Village Beach Resort is situated on a lovely strip of coastline just outside Nungwi Village in the north. The atmosphere is calm with dhows plying the azure waters in front of you. There are two types of rooms - standard and sea-view rooms. The sea-view rooms are built in double-storey makuti thatch blocks on the beach and standard rooms are located away from the seafront in an enclosed courtyard. The rooms have air-conditioners, en-suite facilities and double, twin or single beds.

SMILES BEACH HOTEL

Smiles is all about enjoying the simple pleasures in life: long carefree days on the beach, awesome sunsets, the sound of the ocean and watching local village life going by. Smiles has 4 double-storey units, each containing 4 rooms. The rooms have balconies overlooking the tropical gardens and beach. The rooms are simply furnished and exceptionally clean. They have the luxuries of air-conditioning, telephone, satellite television, mosquito nets, hair dryers and safes.

BAOBAB BEACH BUNGALOWS

The layout of the lodge is different. The main reception area is located very far back in the lodge, then they have built the lodge in a U-shape facing out towards the ocean. There is a large area of landscaped garden between the two sides and it looks like the lodge goes on for miles and miles. It has 50 rooms in total consisting of 21 bungalows, 19 Lodge Rooms and 10 Deluxe Rooms. All rooms have en suite facilities with hot water.

KARAFUU HOTEL BEACH RESORT

Karafuu is ideally located on a blissful stretch of palm-fringed beach on the east coast with white sand and dazzling blue water. The hotel has over 90 rooms, divided into superior rooms, cottage and junior suites. Only 26 of the junior suites are situated along the beachfront. The others are set a short distance back in the tropical gardens. All rooms have air-conditioners, ceiling fans, mini-bars, telephones and en-suite bathrooms. Each room has its own veranda and the beds have mosquito nets.

BREEZES BEACH CLUB

Breezes is ideally situated on the east coast, so endless white beaches, shady palm trees and a dazzling blue ocean lie in wait. The rooms at Breezes Beach Club are situated in lush, palm-lined gardens a short distance from the beach. All the rooms are identical in terms of size, décor and facilities, but the superior deluxe and deluxe rooms are closer to the sea than the standard rooms. The deluxe rooms have outdoor terraces, while the superior deluxe rooms have the advantage of balconies. All rooms have the convenience of air conditioning, a mini-bar fridge, a safe, an en-suite bathroom and a sofa bed to sleep a third person.

THE ZANZIBAR BEACH HOTEL AND RESORT

The Resort is situated on the island’s northeast coast. Accommodation is offered in Family Villas, Luxury Rooms and Standard Rooms. The standard rooms can comfortably sleep 2 adults. Each is en-suite and an open balcony. The luxury rooms are situated closer to the beach, large enough to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children. The family villas, situated on a hill with gorgeous ocean views, are perfect for larger families of 6. They offer 3 rooms, a lounge, open-plan kitchen and a lovely balcony overlooking the sea.

MATEMWE BUNGALOWS

Matemwe Bungalows is a small, intimate guest lodge situated on a rocky outcrop above a magnificent stretch of beach in north-east Zanzibar. There are 14 palm-thatched en-suite rooms. These are divided into six superb honeymoon suites and eight standard bungalows. Each has a private veranda with a hammock offering stunning sea views. The suites are airy and spacious and the stylish decor reflects the colours of the beach. The standard bungalows are smaller and less stylish, but still highly recommended.

BLUEBAY BEACH RESORT

Bluebay Beach Resort is situated on the finest wide, white, sandy beach on the island of Zanzibar. Located on the East Coast in an area known as Kiwengwa, the hotel is only 35 minutes drive from the town and the airport on a recently built tarmac road. It offers 80 Superior rooms, 6 Deluxe rooms and 2 Sultan rooms, all of which enjoy magnificent views of the Indian Ocean. Each consists of spacious bedroom, separate dressing room, en suite bathroom and veranda or balcony.

MAPENZI BEACH CLUB

Built in traditional Zanzibari style, with a huge thatched makuti roof and coral walls, Mapenzi Beach Club is an enormous hotel spread out on a sloping hill. The gardens are lush, full of tall palm trees and vibrant bougainvillea. There are 87 bungalows divided into three categories: garden-view, standard or seafront rooms. All the rooms are attractively decorated with carved beds and mozzie nets over the beds. They are extremely comfortable and have verandas. Each room has en-suite facilities with hot water, a hairdryer, air conditioning, ceiling fan, telephone and safe deposit box.

OCEAN PARADISE

This big international-style resort is situated in a 6.5 hectare palm grove and fronted by a magnificent stretch of coastline on Zanzibar’s beautiful northeast coast. The beautiful gardens have been landscaped using indigenous trees and plants to attract the various bird species on the island. Luxurious rooms are situated in innovatively designed circular-shaped bungalows in the lush tropical gardens. Some are set on a rise on the escarpment while others are closer to the beach. They have wrap-around balconies and large bathrooms with delightful walk-in showers painted in earthy tones.

ZAMANI ZANZIBAR KEMPINSKI

Set on 30 acres of landscaped gardens and designed to harmoniously blend in with its natural surrounds, only materials native to the island are being used in its construction. POLE POLE BUNGALOW RESORT

Pole Pole is a luxury bungalow resort set on the southern side of the main island - Mafia. It has pleasant tropical gardens and spectacular coastal views. The 9 elegant and spacious bungalows are built entirely out of wood and raised on stilts. They are all spacious with a private veranda overlooking a stretch of sandy beach and Chole Bay. All bungalows have en suite bathrooms.

THE MAFIA ISLAND LODGE

The Mafia Island Lodge stands amidst tall palms on a sandy beach in Chole Bay, in the heart of the marine park near Utende village on South coast of Mafia. 40 comfortable rooms are set among the coconut palms with their own veranda overlooking the bay. They are all self-contained with air conditioning. Twin and double beds are available. Among the 40 rooms there are 2 suites with a large living room. Hot and cold water is available 24 hours a day.

KINASI ISLAND LODGE

Kinasi Island Lodge is a small lodge facing Chole Bay on Mafia Island. Accommodation consists of 14 cottages that are widely spaced for total privacy and exclusivity. All the cottages are en suite and have king size beds for your comfort.

CHOLE MJINI

On the tiny island of Chole on Mafia Island is Chole Mjini, set amongst lush jungle, overgrown orchards and mangrove forest. Chole Mjini’s 7 unique treehouses are set in attractive tropical gardens and ancient Persian ruins. Each is designed individually and built using local materials and craftsmanship. Some are built around baobab trees, others set in the mangroves, some with four-poster beds or with fantastic views. Each treehouse has a private garden with toilet and shower at ground level.

FUNDU LAGOON

Enchanted, romantic and stylish, Fundu Lagoon is your quintessential far-flung island hideaway. The 14 bungalows, reached via sandy walkways in the tropical vegetation, are the ultimate in sumptuous tented lodgings. They're built on hardwood, stilted decks under a makuti roof and have large, private balconies overlooking the sea. The interiors are spacious and stylishly decorated. MANTA REEF LODGE

This attractive, rustic lodge is situated on a cliff-face overlooking a heavenly, 5 kms stretch of beach along the Kigomasha Peninsula on the northern tip of Pemba. There are 14 spacious timber cabins which are set on stilts. There are 11 rooms at the front of the property. The décor is simple, but the rooms are very comfortable. They have the convenience of en-suite bathrooms with hot water and mosquito nets. There are also 4 rooms at the back of the property which are suitable for families.
