Eco / Cultural Tour Itinerary


Itinerary: 5 Days & 4 Nights

Day 1:

After breakfast, drive to Mulala Village for a cultural / eco tour. 

You are now at Mulala Village.  Say ‘cheese’ please!

A typical rural setting nestled surrounded by the spectacular scenery.  Experience the hospitality of the Mulala Agape Women Group.  Visit the farms of Agape Women Group, and the women will explain their farming methods and show you the various economic activities they have for example cheese making, chilli growing, baking and sewing; all these are done by using local methods. They will also show you the way Biogas energy is being used.  And thereafter you will participate in doing some of the above activities. 

Have a lunch break.  The Mulala Agape Women Group will prepare a traditional meal for you.  There is a nice garden where you can relax and enjoy a beverage or a simple, traditional meal, which will be served by Women’ Group.

Thereafter, enjoy the scenery of Marisha riverbanks, thick with tropical vegetation and home of colourful birds and primates.  Your guide will show you the most common medical plants used by the villagers.  You may continue on the Ziwa la Mzungu (White Man’s Lake) where a big colony of fruits bats is living. 

Lamek Hill Tour.  Criss-cross the coffee and banana firms and head up Lamek Hill for a breathtaking view of both Mounts Kilimanjaro, Meru and of the Maasai plains. On your way back you can visit the farm of Moses Koroiya, the traditional healer of the village. 

Drive back to Keys Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2:

After breakfast, drive to Marangu village.  Stay with Chagga family, have opportunity to witness and experience Chagga culture with a visit to a traditional Chagga house.  Participate with members of the family in zero grazing livestock feeding, coffee picking, processing and finally tasting coffee which you have prepared and cooking local food yourself. 

Enjoy lunch at family house prepared by you with Chagga women.  Enjoy Machalari and Mtori, ‘famous Chagga food’.  Have your yoghurt too!

Visit the famous Kinukamori which is a panoramic viewpoint ideal for photographing waterfalls and Mount Kilimanjaro. 

Visit Kilimanjaro National Park Gate and get explanation on history, ecological features, etc. and time to take photos. 

Drive to Keys Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3:

 

After breakfast, drive to Machame village.  This tour starts from the centre of Kyalia, and takes you through Kalali market to Masama.  The catchments forest is a historically sacred place of natural forests where two rivers meet (conference) and also the cave where local people worship during the traditional festivals.  Big cave is used to accommodate about 200 Chagga with their animals.

Another prominent attraction is the natural bridge called ‘Daraja la Mungu’ or ‘God’s Bridge’, crossing the Marire and Namwi rivers, which feed the waterfall.  From there you proceed with the tour that starts from the Kyalia main office to Primary Health Care (PHC), via Ifiyo route.  This area is engaged in a number of activities around the issues of sustainability and health care.  Visitors can get a glimpse of how local people make pottery for food and water storage.  The area is also engaged in many conservation activities such as rainwater harvesting, construction of ventilated improved pit, latrines, bigots, sand filter purification of water and drip irrigation.  Here, the guide will explain how such projects are developed and how they are ideal for rural settings. 

Drive back to Keys Hotel

Day 4:

After breakfast, taking your lunch pack from the hotel and drive to Maasai Village (Engaboli & Koisaka Boma).  Stay with Maasai family, have an opportunity to witness and experience Maasai culture with a visit to their traditional houses.  Get to know your host by a brief introduction from both sides in Swahili language by the Maasai women and men.  You will be introduced to Village Leaders who will provide you with any information you need to know about the Maasai life.  See how the Maasai those among the last of the World’s Patrol people are coming to terms with 21st Century in their own time.  Please do not hesitate visit, discuss with the women on issues related to their normal and daily life including women circumcision.  Participate in making beads and have a chance of dancing and singing with the Maasai women.

A view into the cultures and daily life of the Maasai people should not be missed while you are in Tanzania.  Do not forget your camera, as Maasai will not mind taking pictures with you.
Day 5:
It is your day of going around town. Visit the central market and other nearby markets. You have an opportunity to explore your time by going around town, your guide will show you the important places in town before coming back to Keys Hotel for a rest.
